“There is a wild and untamable beauty in us when we are in harmony with nature.” – Bernard Leach, British studio potter

My cousin, Bill, is in love100_3689 with gryphons, mythical guardians of the divine. A majestic combination of lionesque body, tail and hind legs, eagle’s head and wings and talons, gryphons are more than the king of beasts, soar beyond the kingdom of birds.

Bill carves them, shaping raw wood into legendary feathers and fur. The task at hand absorbs him and he becomes one with the creature’s strength and boldness, majestic power and untamable beauty.

  1. Mary, we love your blog this morning !! I have bought five copies of your book. It is wonderful to just pick up in a quiet moment and read a couple of pages. I am amazed at your prolific, in depth writing. It makes me think about what is really important in life.

Hope you are enjoying the start of the good weather and all the beautiful blossoming trees and bulbs. Pity that they last so briefly

Your “classic wonder”, that is. Love Bernard Leach. Love the ideal of becoming one with the work, although it’s rarely attained.

    1. You’re right on that…maybe should have said that Bill dreams of becoming one with the work. As said in Br. Eric of Taize’s quote, his carving clearly opens the gate of dreams!

What do you think?
